The school began in 1954 and was formed by the combination of the national model high-tech institutes—Shanghai Light Industry College, Shanghai Metallurgy College, Shanghai Chemical College, and the Shanghai Spice Research Institute of the former Ministry of Light Industry. 2007 year with excellent results by the Ministry of Education Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation and won students enrollment eligibility; 2008 became a master's degree authorized units and began graduate education; 2010 Nian Fengxian completion of the new campus, the school moved to the main Fengxian new campus; 2016 Nian via the Ministry of Education approved renamed "Shanghai University of applied Sciences" to achieve leapfrog development of the school; 2017 onwards to carry out doctoral degree project construction. The school won the title of “Civilized Unit” in Shanghai for nine consecutive times.

Fengxian Campus

The school has two campuses, Fengxian Campus and Xuhui Campus, covering an area of 1,428 mu. There are 19 secondary colleges (departments), 51 undergraduate majors, 6 first-level master's degree programs (including 28 secondary subjects and directions) and 5 master's degree programs. There are 1,610 faculty members, including 1022 full-time teachers. 15982 Full-time students, including 617 vocational students, 14278 undergraduates, 1087 graduates.
